Jinja

Introduction

Located near the origin of Nile River and on the shores of the massive Lake Victoria, Jinja is the second-largest city in Uganda. Jinja is the adventure capital of East Africa due to the availability of a wide range of adventure sports like white water rafting, kayaking, bungee jumping, ziplining, and more. Being the historic origin of Nile, the town’s average temperature throughout the year is 22.8 C with the coldest and warmest months being June and January, respectively.

Before 1906, Jinja was a fishing village which benefited from its location on the long-distance trade routes. The town got its name from the languages of two tribes, Baganda and Basoda, from the Ejjinja, which means rock. The town was named so due to the presence of large rocks near the Ripon Falls that enabled migration in Africa.

Unlike most of Africa, where migration was hindered by rivers like the Nile, Jinja due to the massive rocks in Ripon Falls has a crossing point that allowed migration, trade, and fishing. The point also allowed the two major tribes that lived there and their languages, Baganda and Basoda, to mingle. As such, similarities can be observed between the two despite the barrier between the two settlements.
