Sonmarg, the land of Golden Meadows is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu Kashmir. This striking hill station is a major tourist destination and an excellent trekking zone with a number of peaks placed placidly in its valley, such as, the Kolhoi, Sirbal, Amarnath and Machoi Peak. Located along the bank of the Nallah Sindh a tributary of the Jhelum, Sonmarg is the land of picturesque lakes, mighty glaciers, meadow valleys and walnut orchards.
How to reach
Air: The nearest airport is at Srinagar 70km away.
Rail: Jammu is the nearest railway station 360km.
Road: Sonmarg is well connected by road to Srinagar and Jammu. One crosses the famous Jawahar Tunnel that links the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.
Things to do
Sonmarg is cut off during winters and when the routes open in April the town is carpeted in white snow. The numerous attractions of Sonmarg include: Vishansar Lake and Gadsar Lake – A popular trekking camp this one kilometer long lake is the source of the Nelum River and during summers is a pristine sight with green grass and sheep grazing in flocks. Brown trout are found here in abundance making it a perfect destination for fishing and angling. The Gadsar Lake is another splendid lake area surrounded by picture perfect landscapes and from where one can enjoy the views of frozen Baltan Lakes and Satsar.
Nilagrad River – The River with red water is considered holy as well as known for its medicinal properties. A wonderful picnic spot the river side is surrounded by the scenic landscape and attracts many locals and tourist who take a dip in its waters.
Thajiwas Glacier – A hotspot for adventure seekers, the Thajiwas Glacier is for ice skiing and ice scooter escapades. Couple that with magnificent surrounding snow clad mountains and high peaks as well as the clear skies, makes this stunning glacier at an altitude of 9186ft a fun destination.
Zoji La Pass – This pass is an important link between Kashmir and Ladakh and is one of the highest peaks of the world where tanks were used during an India Pakistan war. The snow covered layers on the road are one of the thickest that you will see anywhere else in the country.
Baltal valley – At the foot of the Zoji La Pass lays the beautiful valley of Baltal which is known as the base camp for those making way to Amarnath. Valley to Sindh’s meandering movements the Baltal valley is also an excellent camping and trekking site. Treks from Pahalgam and parts of Kashmir are organized to the valley.
Gangabal Lake – Located at the foot of the Harmukh Mountain and at an elevation of 3600m the Gangabal Lake is home to the freshwater fish. It is also regarded sacred and is often visited during the Amarnath Yatra.
Krishnasar Lake – Known as a wonderful fishing as well as water sports site and surrounded by greenery and large trees this lake is also for those who want some solitude with nature. The Satsaran and Nichinai Pass are some of the other high altitude snow clad attractions that are visited for their wonderful landscapes and views. White water rafting expeditions are carried out from Baltal to the Shutkari Bridge. A great adventure activity for wild fun lovers, the rafting is also a fun way to explore the river under the lofty mountains.
There are a multitude of nearby destinations from Sonmarg, such as, Pahalgam, Amarnath, Srinagar and more. Sonmarg tucked in the lap of the Himalayas is yet another wonderful destination of the mountains that brings together adventure, serenity and a unique closeness to nature
