Introduction

Located on the western coast of Namibia the beach town of Swakopmund is a perfect holiday destination for both the Namibians and tourists across the world. Apart from the fact that it borders the Namib Desert and acts as the gateway to visit the Skeleton Coast, Swakopmund itself is a wonderful town to discover. With a very heavy German influence on its architecture and city landscape, Swakopmund remains to be grounded in its African roots and undoubtedly is a major adventure destination for those seeking some thrill.

The tourism industry in place is supported by scattered bars, night clubs, coffee shops, and hotels. The visitors can come here and enjoy small marine cruises, quad biking, skydiving, and hot air balloon rides. Parts of the Namib desert witness, nearly up to 140 km inland and is a major source of moisture for the various life forms living in the desert.

The Jetty one of the most iconic landmarks of the city is the incomplete iron pier that was constructed in 1911 but became redundant since Walvis Bay was already being used. Used for ship moorings initially the Jetty is now popular amongst walkers and anglers. Through the years the Jetty has gone through various constructions and repair phases, however, it continues to remain one of the prominent markers of the city. The West Coast Recreational Area in the Namib Desert surrounds the city and is the leading destination for adventure seekers. Sandboarding, dune carting, quad biking, parachuting, hot air ballooning, deep-sea fishing, parachuting, beach angling, you name it, are some of the adrenaline adventure activities that can be tried out here. Besides, a number of tours and organizers have various adventure and sports activities along the desert and beach terrains of Swakopmund that attract throngs of daring tourists and locals. The Swakopmund Museum occupies the area of the old harbor warehouse and is a magnificent repository of the history and ethnic cultures of the people of Namibia, as well as has sections of the flora and fauna of the region. Within the city, some of the other tourist attractions, include the Marine Memorial or Marine Denkmal that was built to honor the Germans who defeated the Herero uprising, the State House or the Kaiserliches Bezirksgericht near the Swakopmund Lighthouse, the Hohenzollern Building and the Woermannhaus a German > National Marine Aquarium is the perfect way to explore the South Atlantic Ocean with its tunnel that brings the sharks and marine life at close quarters. Swakopmund also has a lot to do even for those who are not really adventurous but want a leisurely trip. Walks along the Swakopmund River, a trip to the beautiful dunes in the desert, a laze along the warm sands on the beaches, a camel safari or horse ride along the Okakambe Trails are best ways to unwind. For wildlife lovers, the Cape Cross Seal Colony is a great day trip to explore the friendly seals. The Walvis Bay Lagoon and the Swakopmund Saltworks or along the River Swakopmund, are wonderful birding sites and one can be lucky enough to spot flamingoes along with other bird species. The Welwitschia plants are the main attraction along the Welwitschia Drive to the Moon Landscape, a picturesque valley eroded by the Swakopmund River. Goanikontes a farm area near the drive is a wonderful picnic destination.
