Agumbe is a village in the district of Shimoga, Karnataka. The village is popular for its rich Biodiversity. The region receives the highest rainfall in southern India and is, therefore, more often than not referred to as Cherrapunjee of South India. The view that the village provides is beyond the imagination of a common man. The Govt has taken initiative here to promote the Cottage Industry. The region also has several waterfalls which you can see on route.

Culture
 

Karnataka is home to people from different ethnicities. There are Kannadigas, Tuluvas, Konkanis, Todas, Buddhists, and many more. The culture here is full of colours and music and moves. The performing arts include Yakshagana, Bharatnattyam, Ranga Shankara, Ninasam, Carnatic music, Gamaka, and many more. The people of Karnataka can still be seen in their traditional attire i.e. saree and dhoti.
 

Flora and Fauna
 

The forest has patches of woodlands, grasslands and evergreen lands. The vegetation of the forest include a wide variety of flora which includes several species of grass, scrubs, shrubs, creepers, climbers trees etc. the vegetation of the forest include Indicus, Meliola, Tarenna, Bamboo, Sandalwood and many others. There are several rare medicinal plants found here:- Garcinia, Eugenia, Ficus, Diospyros etc.
 

The fauna found in the place is as rich as its flora. The place includes a wide range of animals-mammals, amphibians, birds, fish, etc. the forest is home to several endangered species too. The fauna includes the tigers, leopard, deer, bison, macaque, dog, sambar etc. The park is home to several species of birds that include owl, woodpeckers, hornbills, bee-eater, kingfishers, frogmouths, trogon etc. several migratory birds visit the Park in large number like the waterfowl. The place is also a home to several very rare and dangerous species of snakes like vipers, pythons etc.  Other than this there are several species of insects each with a wide variety.
 

Where to go
 

Koodlu Theertha Falls is among the popular tourist places in Agumbe. The water falls from a height of 300 ft forming a pool at the base. This is accessible to the tourists. The place is believed to be the one where saints and sages performed penance in the past. Therefore is considered holy by many. The falls is surrounded by greenery and the atmosphere here is serene. The water falls originates from the River Sita thus it is popularly known as Sita falls.
 

Onake Abi Falls is a popular place to visit near Agumbe. The place is not only known for the beautiful falls but also of the scenic beauty that you can see from the top. The falls is very close to the sunset point of Agumbe. It is 4 kms of Trekking to reach the falls. The place is filled with the sound of water and chirping of birds.
 

Sunset point is a frequented place in Agumbe. Sun set from Agumbe is breathing view. You can see the sun diving into the sea.  

Jogigundi Falls is popular as it has water throughout the year. This is because the region receives rainfall throughout the year. The falls is named Jogi because it is believed that a sage (yogi) meditated here. The water falls from a cave making this place so special. The water forms a pool at the base in spite of the soft descend. The pool and the falls are accessible to the public. The fall is surrounded by greenery and orchid trees.
 

What to do
 

Trekking to reach the Koodlu Falls, Onake Falls etc is a must activity. It is also compulsory if you wish to visit the falls as no transportation is available to go up the hill.
 

What to eat
 

People here eat rice and ragi as staple foods. The dishes include a variety of rice dishes, Sorghum, dose, vade etc. even the sweet of Karnataka re very popular all over India and abroad too. Mysore Pak, Karadantu, Amingad, Dhrwad Peda and several others are really mouth watering. Karnataka is also known for its Udipi cuisine. This is a full time meal and consists of dishes made from rice, grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. It is made out of local spice mix and is delicious.
 

How to reach
 

The nearest airport to Agumbe is that of Mangalore. From here taxi services are there to Agumbe. Few buses also are available to go to Agumbe.
 

The Mysore railway station is the nearest station to the village. From there, taxi or a bus has to be taken to reach the village.
 

There are buses and taxi services from nearby towns and cities to go to the village. There are regular bus services from places like Mangalore, Bangalore and Mysore etc.
