Big Five Animals in Masai Mara

The Masai Mara, known for its diverse wildlife, is home to the majestic Big Five: Lions, African Elephants, Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, and Leopards. The Big Five refers to the iconic wildlife that graces the savannahs and woodlands of this amazing Kenyan destination. These animals earned their name because they were fierce and difficult to hunt in the African desert.

Lion: In Kenya, witnessing the majestic lions of Masai Mara in their natural habitat is a truly thrilling experience that you will for sure get with our safari packages.

  • Observing their majestic behavior and intricate social dynamics is a highlight of our safari. Because it is the largest and fiercest predator on earth, it is often referred to as the king of the jungle.
  • The lion's natural prey are zebras, impalas, giraffes, and other herbivores, particularly wildebeests.
  • Lions are typically peaceful animals that do not look scared by close proximity to people, although they have been known to attack humans.

African elephant: The gentle giants of the savannah hold the title of the largest land animal globally, making it a truly impressive sight to behold.

  • Discover one of Africa's largest populations of elephants thriving in the Masai Mara region, where these magnificent creatures roam freely.
  • Even though elephants are regarded as gentle giants, it is important to remember that these gentle giants are unpredictable and might charge at vehicles, people, or any other animal if they feel threatened.
  • Enjoy observing these majestic creatures from a safe distance to admire their beauty and grace while respecting their space and natural behaviours.

Rhinoceros: Rhinoceros are an endangered species, and witnessing them during your Masai Mara safari is a rare sighting and special experience.

  • There are two different species: the black rhino and the white rhino. In our Masai Mara safari packages, you will get the chance to learn about their unique characteristics and behaviours.
  • White Rhino: The white rhino got its name from the Dutch word "weid”, meaning wide, because of its big mouth. Its color is yellowish-grey. Its wide lips and square jaw help it graze on grass.
  • Black Rhino: On the other hand, black rhinos have a pointed mouth, allowing them to feed on the leaves from bushes and trees.
  • White rhinos are larger and more common compared to black rhinos, but both species face threats to their survival.

Cape Buffalo: Among the Big Five animals of Africa, the Cape Buffalo is known for its imposing presence and strength.

  • In Masai Mara, Cape Buffaloes can be the most dangerous to humans and can charge at astonishing speeds when threatened due to their territorial nature and protective instincts.
  • They are often found in large herds and spend their time grazing in floodplains and savannas.
  • Dominant bulls take charge, adopting an aggressive stance when approached, while the other adults will surround the calves to protect them.

Witness the wild beauty of Masai Mara as you spot herds of Cape Buffaloes roaming the savannah, a true testament to the wilderness of the region.

Leopards: Witnessing these secretive cats in their natural habitat is an exciting highlight of any Masai Mara safari experience.

  • Unlike lions, leopards are usually seen alone rather than in groups.
  • Leopards are the most mysterious among the big five animals, often hunting at night, adding to their mystique.
  • The Masai Mara offers a better chance to spot leopards compared to other reserves.
  • Keep a sharp lookout during the day for leopards, as they tend to hide under trees or in the underbrush.
