Tadoba Andhari National Park

Home | Indian Subcontinent | India | Tadoba Andhari National Park

Tadoba Andhari Tiger reserve is the oldest national park of Maharashtra. It was formed by merging Andhari Tiger reserve with Tadoba National Park in 1995. The name ‘Tadoba Andhari’ is derived from the name of God Taroba or Taru which is worshipped by tribal people and Andhari River which flows through the park. The Tadoba National Park is divided into three forest ranges:- i)Tadoba north range ii) Kolsa south range and iii) Morhurli range, which is sandwiched in between the first two. The three waterbodies in the park namely Tadoba Lake, Kolsa Lake and Andhari river sustain the ecosystem.

The major part of the park lies in the hilly area. The terrain ranges from thick forests, smooth meadows to deep valleys. The vegetation is a southern tropical dry deciduous type with the teak as the predominant tree species.

The region enjoys the profuseness of biodiversity. Animals found here include Tiger, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, nilgai, dhole, striped hyena, small Indian civet, jungle cats, sambhar, spotted deer, barking deer, chital, four-horned antelope and honey badger.
