Masai Mara - The great migration

Aug 2018

Situated near Narok in Kenya, Masai Mara is one of the popular reserves. It forms the most spectacular ecosystem of Africa alongwith the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

It is named in the honour of Masai people who are original inhabitants of the area. The word ‘mara’ means spotted denoting trees, savanna and cloud shadows that characterize the area.

The park is situated on a rift valley. It is bounded by the Serengeti Park to the south, the Siria escarpment to the west, and Maasai pastoral ranches to the north, east and west.

The reserve is characterized by open grassland dotted by seasonally rivulets. The Sand, Talek and Mara River meander through the reserve.

The park shelters unique fauna including cheetah, serval, hyena, bat-eared foxes, black-backed and side-striped jackals, hippo, crocodile, baboons, warthog, topi, eland, Thompson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, waterbuck, oribi, reed-buck, and zebra. Hippopotamus and crocodiles are found in Mara and Talek Rivers.

About 470 species of birds have been identified at the park such as vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles, African pygmy-falcons and the lilac-breasted roller.

Accommodation will be at Ashnil Mara or Mara Serena. These are amongst the best resorts in Masai Mara. Food in resort will be scrumptious buffet spread comprising international and indian cuisine. Vegetarian options can also be arranged upon request.

Located at the very centre of the famous ‘Mara Triangle’ in the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate safari destination. Set high on a bush-cloaked hill with long views over the savannah and down to the winding coils of the hippo-filled Mara River, it stands centre-stage to one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife arenas.

Nairobi to Masai Mara transport will be in internal flights. Safaris will be in comfortable Land-cruisers with upto 4 people in one car excluding the driver. These vehicles can drive in extreme off-road conditions and can handle all terrain inside the park.

We prefer this kind of land cruiser due to 360 degree viewing angle which is suitable for photography also.

This is another kind of land cruiser.

  • I had travelled with Alankar to Tal Chhappar for a birding trip in November 2015. The entire logistics was seamlessly managed, from stay to our vehicles. There were immense learning opportunities on the field and we spotted over 40 species of birds including many birds of prey for which Tal Chhappar is famous. I wish Alankar the best in his future endeavours.
    Sougata Ganguli
    Director of Sales
  • I had a great time with Wild Voyager team at Rajaji National Park. Wish them the best for future.
    Praveen Sinha
  • The Jim Corbett National Park has recently opened after monsoon season of 2016. We were excited about staying within Forest Guest houses of Dhikala and Bijrani zones. The trip was not disappointing at all with lush green forests, good guides to ensure that the vehicle was well kept and ride was not very bumpy. The fauna was in full glory in the park. The tiger show on Sambhar road was a delightful experience. There was a slight hiccup in Dhikala Forest Rest house, but was sorted out soon. The stay in Malani Forest Rest house was a very soothing experience, sleeping along with jungle sounds. It was not the first visit for us to Jim Corbett National Park, and will not be the last one also.
    Sarthak Singhal
  • It was my first visit to Kenya. Loved the places. Loved the way it was arranged. Came back with happy memories.
