Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Introduction

The vast Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is recognized as the biggest sanctuary in Karnataka and is located in the Mandya District, Srirangapatna Taluk. The exclusively small yet mesmerizing sanctuary extends up to 0.67 sq. The entire sanctuary accommodates up to six islets and six islands on the river Kaveri. Here, over 40000 birds of varied species migrate in the winter. The islets are situated during the reservoir water, chiefly built by the weir construction across the river Kaveri. Initially, in the year 1940, Salim Ali played a vital role in officially getting the area declared a wildlife sanctuary. Salim Ali thus helped make a secure platform and nesting site for a myriad of bird species through his imitation of this sanctuary.

The sanctuary is substantially small compared to other sanctuaries, yet it is home to a vibrant species of birds. The size of the sanctuary fundamentally aims to help ease the observation, access, maintenance, and regulation of the birds and the sanctuary as a whole.
