Pokhara, also known as Pokhara Lekhnath, is a metropolis in Nepal. It is 200 km away from Kathmandu the capital of Nepal. The altitudes of the city vary from 827m to 1740m above sea level. With an average temperature of 22˚C, it has a humid subtropical climate. There is a huge variation in the altitudes of hills surrounding Pokhara they raise from about 1000m to 7,500m in a belt of 30 km. The place receives a good amount to rain because of its altitude. There is variation seen in the amount of rain in the north and south Pokhara. Pokhara lies on the route of trade between India and China. Pokhara Nepal has been ruled by several dynasties like the Shah dynasty, Newars, Kaski, etc. Miya Patan, in the eastern fringes of the Pokhara region, is situated a Muslim community. Otherwise, the place is dominated by Buddhists and Hindus. The region consists of several lakes and rivers.
Music is an integral part of Nepali Culture. Pokhara especially is known for its musical Traditions. The instruments include sarangi, modal and bansuri (flute). These are a part of Nepali folk music. Resham Ferrari, Kyalee Tune, etc constitute the local Nepali folk music. People here speak Nepali. They also understand English a little bit to carry out a conversation.
Where to go
World peace temple is a Stupa which is the First Pagoda, constructed in Nepal In 1999. It is 115 ft tall with a width of 344 ft. it has separate tiers for religious visitors and tourists. The top holds a crystal stone that is believed to be a symbol of intellect and grace. It has statues of Buddha displayed in various positions from various countries. From here one can have an amazing view of the Annapurna Mountain Range. Viewing sunrise and sunset over Pokhara from world peace temple is an experience you don’t want to miss. Phewa Tal (Lake), surrounded by high peaks covered in white, is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Pokhara. It is worth seeing especially during dawn when the various shades of red are reflected in the crystal clear water. There are boats which you can hire to go across the lake. Rupa Lake being one of the remote lakes is less polluted as compared to other lakes. It is a must-visit site for people who love being a part of nature. One can experience true serenity here. As the place is not crowded it is very quiet and peaceful. Begnas Lake is around 13.3 km away from the main city. It has a road which goes alongside where you can take a nice walk. Devi’s falls are near Pokhara. It is a beautiful scene to view. Pokhara has a few caves and it’s an amazing experience to visit them. Mahendra Caves are situated in Batulechaur, the northern side of Pokhara. Gupteswar Mahadev Caves is very important from a religious point of view. It is located in Chorepatan. It has an idol of Lord Shiva. Chamara Gufa, also known as bat cave is nearby Mahendra Caves. The cave is named thus because there are several bats here. International Mountain Museum is very fascinating especially for people who are fond of trekking, mountain climbing, etc. it is situated in Ratopahiro. It is one of the 14 highest peaks oh the Himalayan Range.
What to do
Hiking and trekking are popular adventure sport in Pokhara. Trekking and Hiking sites include Annapurna Range, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Khopra Ridge, etc. Boating can be done on the lake waters. Boats can be easily hired at the site itself. Rafting, canoeing are fun activities. Paragliding is an activity that people look for. It is done near Pokhara Lake and Annapurna Range. Lessons for the same are also given prior to the actual activity. Yoga, meditation and Massage are the other things that you can do. Services are available at Tushita Nepal Meditation Retreats, Poorna Yoga Retreat Centre, etc. Trinkets and jewels are a favorite choice for shopping for the people who visit Pokhara. Handmade items are also a nice pick. You can even customize the handmade items you buy.
What to eat
All types of food are available in Nepal. Krishna’s Kitchen is the choice for Thai cuisine, Natssul for Korean, Metro for Crepes, AZRaa for Japanese, Caffe Concerto for Italian, Hua Han for Chinese, etc. The ancient tea house is where you can get traditional Nepali dish – dal bhat and momos. Another place is Pokhara Thakali Kitchen. Mike’s Breakfast, Koto, Pushkar Guest House, Hanging Garden, Everest Steak House, Once Upon a Time, Jazz Café, Laughing Buddha Restaurant, etc. Good and quality food is available even of the local street stalls. Momo, noodles, etc are available almost everywhere.
How to reach
The flight is a good option to reach Pokhara from Kathmandu the Capital city with the only international airport. There are bus services too from Kathmandu (in every 15 mins) and other places like Sunauli. Taking a cab is also a good option.
